Anglers in Michigan have pulled some
fish out of local lakes this summer that have teeth that look like human teeth!
The fish, called a red-bellied pacu eats nuts and seeds, and the teeth are
suited for this diet. Although far from its native waters of South
America, this fish is a popular aquarium fish that was imported to the U.S.
In fact, according to the Michigan Department of
Natural Resources, the United States leads the world in importing ornamental
fish. The worldwide aquarium industry tops $1 billion each year. In July, two
pacus were pulled from Lake St. Clair and one from the Port Huron area. At
least 27 U.S. states have reported finding pacus in their lakes, creeks, or ponds.
